Affected by the endorsement fever that sweeps through America, Panama's president Martin Torrijos is ready to endorse a candidate to be the next president of the United States.
"I have my speech ready, all I need to do is fill in the name," the president told Bananama Republic in an exclusive interview. "I'm looking forward to stand next to the chosen candidate and deliver my endorsement. It'll be such an experience, the crowds, the applause, live on CNN...."
However, interest from the candidates of both the Democrats and the Republicans in an endorsement from the Panamanian leader has so far been minimal. McCain has even ruled out an endorsement all together, commenting that "I have enough shit as it is, and the last thing I need is to have this discussion about my citizenship stirred up again."
Similarly, the Panama governmental jet carrying Torrijos was already en route to Houston to endorse Obama during his victory speech after winning Wisconsin, but was denied permission to land. The Obama campaign declined to comment, but a source close to the candidate said that "Torrijos and his government are exactly what US foreign policy under Obama will try to change".
"Do they still have that salsa artist for a minister?", the source then asked.
Torrijos explains that "the last time we got positive worldwide media attention was when my father signed the Canal treaties with Carter. That is now over thirty years ago. I feel I am entitled to this type of event too."
So far, it seems that only John Edwards, who has already left the race, has taken pity in the troubled Panamanian leader.
"He is welcome to visit and endorse me," said the former presidential hopeful. "But I can't guarantee a big televised event. We're having a family barbecue Sunday, there will also be some political friends. That would be the best I can do for him," Edwards told us.
Torrijos, when we told him, reacted with enthusiasm. "By lack of the really big thing, I am definitely going to take this in consideration," the president said, with a smile from ear to ear.
