In case you hadn’t noticed from our articles: Bananama Republic is under legal assault. Canadian scammer Monte Friesner has filed no less than THREE criminal defamation complaints against us and his company Pronto Cash (in which Herbert Young, the law partner of legislator José Blandón, is a shareholder) filed a civil suit for a million dollars. The three criminal complaints are almost identical but filed in different places to maximize harassment – which is what this is all about of course.
Then, following a call published by Don Winner in which Friesner offered free lawyer service to anyone who wants to file a complaint against us, one Patrick Visser took him up on that offer and Friesner’s lawyer filed yet another denuncia, related to a story we did about Silva Tree, a dubious reforestation scheme that was earlier covered in the Christian Science Monitor.
This is not the first time we have to deal with such complaints. The Panamanian justice system is eager to spread its legs and serve any foreign hustler or crook that seeks to abuse it to silence a journalist or publication. So far, we have a 100% victory rate. Tom McMurrain, a land swindler, filed a complaint, lost, appealed, lost again and was thrown in the slammer. Don Winner stalked your reporter’s children, filed a complaint, and lost. Gustavo Garcia de Paredes, the self-proclaimed “rector magnificus” of the Panama University, whose doctorate is fake and whose only “scientific” publication is an introduction to a booklet about domino, filed a complaint and lost.
Friesner will lose too, and so will Patrick Visser. However, to make that happen, we need your help. Our policy is to ignore the legal harassment coming from Panama’s dysfunctional justice system for obvious reasons like jurisdiction and disclaimers, but every now and then we need to file something to fend off the worst abuses. For example, the personeria tercera in Panama issued an order summoning us to take some articles about Friesner down, and we need to file legal countermeasures against this abuse of authority and violation of due process. And for that we need lawyers and even though we get some great advice from some of them, we haven’t found one yet that works for free.
So, help us survive! Your donation, big or small, will be put to good use. We use PayPal, which enables you to use all major credit cards to assist us in our struggle against those who try to silence us. Click HERE to make a donation. Thanks!
